The Lake George Land Conservancy’s annual Hike-A-Thon is a one-day event held each July 5th, created to showcase LGLC’s parks and preserves as free public resources, and to promote an appreciation for the outdoors and protecting the Lake George watershed.
Hikes take place simultaneously at locations around Lake George, culminating with aerial photography of each group by helicopter. The event is free – we want everyone to be able to participate, regardless of financial means. Donations are gratefully accepted, however, and are used to run the event; any extra is put towards stewardship costs associated with the maintenance and enhancement of these properties.
Due to the the coronavirus pandemic, we had to shift gears to make the 2020 Hike-A-Thon virtual. While it meant we lost the group camaraderie and exciting helicopter elements, this format allowed more people to participate, from anywhere! In planning for this year’s event, we are embracing a hybrid format – going to back to in-person, group hikes and paddles (with extra precautions in place), but also continuing to offer the virtual option for those who are not at the lake or who aren’t able to join group activities yet because of safety or other concerns. It’s the best of both! Visit lakegeorgehikeathon.org for more information, including available sites, registration link, and volunteer and sponsorship information.

All of the present-day Adirondacks are the native homelands of the Mohican people before they were displaced to Wisconsin. Join Heather Bruegl, a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, to learn more about who the Mohican people are and how they shaped our history. Heather will discuss the tribe’s history here and the traditional ways Native Americans take care of the land, stewarding it for the next generations. Join us as we learn about the history of Stockbridge-Munsee Community and their journey from New York to Wisconsin. Heather Bruegl is the Director of Cultural Affairs for the Stockbridge Munsee Community and holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in U.S. History. A curiosity about her own heritage led her to Wisconsin, where she has researched the history of the Native American tribes in the area. In addition to that she also currently travels and speaks on Native American history, including policy and activism.

Join Pete Nelson, a co-founder of Adirondack Diversity Initiative and an adjunct faculty member at North Country Community College, to learn the fascinating stories of some of the names in the region and the people whose presence and labors defined them. This presentation will focus on early mapping and surveying in the Lake George area and include the history of some of the place names that are connected to that mapping and exploration; examine how all-but-forgotten Adirondack history pre-1850 had a profound effect upon the shaping of America. Pete argues that the Adirondack frontier up until the mid 1800’s was critical to the development of our nation, just as the western frontier was later. Pete will also mention on The Adirondack Diversity Initiative’s current efforts in the Park, and the relevance of those efforts to economic, environmental, recreational and other aspects of Adirondack life.
